Birmingham is delivering a first for the UK.

Work has begun to implement highly innovative economic zones across the city bringing £1.5bn and 50,000 new jobs into the city.

The zones align Birmingham’s planning strategy with its economic priorities. Sectors identified for attracting the greatest inward investment will be able to benefit from simplified planning, discounts on business rates and business support.

  • Birmingham City Centre is the largest City Centre Enterprise Zone in the UK
  • The City Centre Enterprise Zone comprises 26 sites across the city centre
  • The Zone is focused on economic sectors which are already clustered in the city centre and which reflect the growth opportunities. They are business and financial services and the ICT, creative and digital media sectors

Over its lifetime, when all the development is delivered, it will:

  • Secure 1.3 million sq metres of new floor space, of which 700,000 square metres is for business and financial services, digital media, ICT and creative industries
  • Create 40,000 new private sector jobs
  • Contribute £2.8 billion to the economy in GVA per annum once the above growth is delivered
  • Generate, once fully developed, additional business rates of circa £70 million per annum
